Copenhagen and Malmo or Oslo and Stockholm

We are looking to go to either Copenhagen and Malmo or Oslo and Stockholm.

We are interested in history and culture and want to get the trains inbetween the cities but was wondering if anyone had any personal recommendations and which cities are more interesting

I'd go for Copenhagen and Oslo. Both are great places to visit.

I've never been to Malmo and I found Stockholm less interesting (and it's a very long way from Oslo)

I believe there is an overnight ferry between Copenhagen and Oslo - just checked £66 one way for two persons inc cabin, cheaper than a hotel night!

Definitely Copenhagen and Oslo. As said Stockholm can be a bit bland and unintersting. Malmo livens up on occasion but Oslo has Frogner Park and Copenhagen has the mermaid in the port area. Try to get a tour of Tuborg/Carlsberg breweries. If time, a trip down/up the fjiords and the Russian border at Kirkenes. Norway is such a luscious country.

Crikey, are they still going? I did the Tuborg tour in 1972.

I'm not sure why people are recommending an option that the OP didn't ask about, although I'm sure it would be good if that's what they wanted to do. I haven't been to Malmo or Oslo so I can't really recommend one combination over the other, but I suspect either would have enough to interest you for a few days.

I noticed that but im use to living with someone who given option a or b will always want option c.

I cant comment on oslo or coppenhagen personally but ive heard lots of good things about both, although both are very expensive to visit.

Malmos ok, in fact the best thing its got going for it is its closeness to coppenhagen as its linked by the oresund bridge also malmo has a max burger, which is one of my favourite burger joints.

Stockholm is lovely, although getting about on public transport can be silly expensive but i really enjoyed it, lots of musuems and art galleries and great places to eat and open spaces (parks etc).

For pure simplicity i would go Malmo/coppenhagen however for a better, but probably much more expensive and more travel intesive, i would do stockholm/oslo

    me again.

one other quick point if you intend on using a low cost carrier, ie ryanair, you will want to factor in the fact than neither stockholm or oslo arrivals are anywhere near either stockholm or oslo so you will need to factor in the cost of bus/train transfer and time

  • I've been to Copenhagen, Stockholm and Malmo and enjoyed all of them especially Copenhagen which has plenty of history, castles, museums etc. For convenience Copenhagen and Malmo would be best as you can fly in/out Copenhagen and it's only 20 mins between the two cities by train over the Oresund. Malmo is a small place compared to the others so not a huge amount to see and do, but enough for a few days, especially if you go in summer as there are some nice parks and seafront walks there too. Stockholm is worth a visit aswell and has the Vasa Museum, a must see if you like history. Not been to Oslo but would love to at some point.

I enjoyed Copenhagen a couple of years ago and took the train to Malmo for the day. I found Malmö less interesting but it's an okay place. I ready recently that a change of train at the airport in Copenhagen is now required as passport controls have been reintroduced but you'd have to check that for yourself.

From Copenhagen there are day trips by train to Helsingor if you're interested in seeing Hamlet's castle. You can stop off on the way to see Luisiana Museum of Modern Art if that's your thing (I definitely enjoyed it). Another great trip is to Roskilde.

We have decided to go to Copenhagen and then do a day trip to Malmo and also maybe another day trip to Helsingborg or other cities as we have got six days and I think that will be too long for just Copenhagen

You might want to check the border situation now that the Swedes and Danes are imposing border controls - it could be chaos at peak times if they are still checking ID at a border which people are used to having no controls. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-35222015

I think you'll find plenty to do in Copenhagen maybe with a day trip out to somewhere like Helsingor. Have a look on tripadvisor and the forums.
