LED light conversion

hi, do we have any electronic wizards on board? :)

we have a set of led lights Xmas type that have a switch box to alternate between different flashing sequences ....

however we would like to remove these features and just have them all on / all off ....

the controller circuit board is here

20160123_184552.jpg

there are two wires in from the transformer

and three out (marked control wires)

I presume that I solder two of the wires to the pos+ wire from the transformer and the remaining one to the neg- wire?

or am I barking up the wrong tree ;)

thanks in advance

It's a bit risky - the voltage in from the transformer will be correct to drive the circuit, but not necessarily correct to drive the LEDs directly. What voltage comes in? I am no electronics expert, but I'd imagine that a similar photo of the other side of the board might be useful too.

    the transformer is 240v in and 30v ~240mA , 7.2va out

The transformer output is obviously AC, not DC and the big resistor possibly limits the current.

I think it's safe to connect the lights directly to the output of the bridge rectifier (to the capacitor) but the polarity (+/-) is very important for LEDs.
Don't take my word for it.

LED lights off this type often flicker at 50Hz partly to reduce the smoothing capacitor needed and partly to provide cooling on the lower duty cycle. You may find the three control wires mean half of the LED's are wired with reverse polarity. This would be how the chase patterns alternate. The circuit may or may not provide enough current for all lamps on all the time.

The push switch in the photo suggests they have a choice of patterns one of which will probably be static (all-on) if so I doubt there will be a power problem.

As grumbler said though the place to connect would be across the rectifier bridge output - almost certainly that will be across the 4.7uF capacitor - I don't have the patience to sketch out the circuit.

I would bin the power supply and control box, then wire in a new one, but you'd have to work out the voltage needed to drive the LEDs. The standard of that controller would have me concerned about the quality and safety of the adaptor.

Alternatively those two transistors probably drive each line of LEDs (I assume it flashes alternately on two distinct lines?). In theory, if you short circuit the two lower pins on each transistor (glob some solder over them), the LEDs should stay on constant regardless of the flasher setting.

just tried to wire in another power supply ... and the lights flicked like paddyrg inter-mated

so back to look at Big Clive's page .........

    and

photobucket is down for maintenance ... so no pics

I will try the to short out the transistors tip when I can double check the pics ;)

OK I could not wait .......

so following Strider590 and (big clive) advice

    and

    up ........

    it works

wife is happy she can have her garden pavilion light back :T

thanks again to every one who helped

if I can ever repay the help ...... I am on the Private Parking forum .....;)
