Is the number a Virgin Media number, or a number you ported from BT to VM ?...if you have already lost VM service, and the number was originally a BT number, I doubt you can get it back as it will probably return to the range holder (BT)
If it's a VM number and you haven't yet lost VM service, cancel the cease then get TT to organise a number port provide, presuming TT and VM have a porting agreement
If you have lost VM service but it's a VM number, they may say to get the number back you need to have a new minimum term contract and that may cost you early termination charges if you restore VM and then move to TT using the correct process, but as VM have there own network and TT use Openreach , then it's a migration but not the usual type of migration
  • We have had the number since 1971, so it is BT, my VM service terminates on the 21 Feb. I understand if the number has already been out of use but it is not.

Last time I moved I had to cancel myself I recall

If the VM service doesn't cease until 21 Feb you presumably can call VM and cancel the cease, I would enquire if this starts a new minimum term contract or not (I don't see why it should, but they may see it different and say it does)
Once you are back with VM, with no orders pending, and you still want to use TT after VM confirming the status of your VM contract , call TT and let them organise the move/migration , you shouldn't have to contact VM again, as it's gaining provider led, TT should do all that for you.
If TT say they cannot or will not port your number you will have to accept another number from TT, or pick another provider to move to.
You could return to BT and keep the number easy enough, but you may not want to use them , I suppose it may come down to what's more important, the number or the deal the provider is offering

You did it the wrong way around. Sign up with TT first-not after you cancel VM. So cancel TT, and cancel your VM disconnection.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
