Silicon around bath and sink

Options
What's the best silicon to use (I have mildew on the current layer in the bathroom)? What will give me the best results? It it best to use the 'gun' or the tube that you can apply straight on?

Anyone got any tips? I have done this job before, but I can never get a good finish. I put it on and then wet my finger and smooth over (keep on wetting my finger). I usually get a load of silicon on my finger that I have to rub off!

  • You can get some silicone now that contains microban, this should stop any mould growth!

It is best if you apply it with a silicone gun, make sure you don't apply too much at once and remember that when you stop moving the gun press the release lever on the silicone gun or else the silicone still comes out of the tube.

There are some good tips here- Silicone sealant

    You could try here

Masking tape either side of the joint. Dont wet the finger, Run finger over, wipe excess on paper towel. Lift tape. Water and fairy liquid spray this over the top and wipe finger again.

    Job done

I read recently that it is using a moist finger to smooth wet silicone sealant which encourages mould to grow. You can now buy a tool for smoothing silicone (it doesn't stick to thre tool itself) and should lengthen the time the silicone remains mould free. I got one from CPC but have'nt used it yet

That is only if you use spit to wet your finger ;)
