  • I have an Asidt Gympal which is great for the cycling as it is clip on, 1GB at around £20 also the the Creative Zen Stone Plus which is great as it has radio built in and is 2GB which you can buy for £39.99 so that's around 1000 tracks plus the radio so I doubt he would get bored.

the other great thing about buying Creative products is the support and also the warranty they give you like for like, and also it's a solid system which is small and compact ideal for exercise and also durable so if you drop it like I did to my Ipod shuffle (don't get me started on the shear underhandedness of Apple) it won't fall to pieces.

So my recommendation is the following if you want budget go for the Gympal but if you want something that will last you at least a few years go for the Creative Zen Stone Plus 2GB, as below

    http://www.themp3station.co.uk/shop/product_info.php?products_id=190&osCsid=446260b4509756c9bea22ec8291735c4

I wouldn't really recommend the Ipod shuffle although it is a great player, as it is seriousley over priced and when you call support the customer is seriousley under valued.

    Cyclist or motorcyclist?

...how would a motorcyclist be exercising? ;)

I'd vote with the Zen Stone as the allround best solution for exercising atm, but (begrudgingly), will give an honourable mention to the iPod Nano/Nike+ getup - one of the few things I think is good about the iPod...

That said, it should go without mentioning (but I'll say it anyway) that it's incredibly dangerous to listen to an MP3 player whilst cycling - on the roads especially, but generally it's just best to be aware of what's around you and your bike...

Not to denigrate Apple, as I love there products but when you have a 100 Million units sold of a particular product with an average value of £100 per unit, you can’t expect great customer service.

Here’s a breakdown (without taking into account the loss they may offset)

    Unit costs £100
    Ex Vat - £85.10
    Retailer cost - £72.34 (Margin)
    Wholesaler/Distributor cost - £61.49

So Apple will sell an Ipod at an average cost of £61.49, and remember over 100 Million units sold

So let’s see the cost to apple, okay if we average the memory to be 30.8GB, which would cost Apple around £19
    LCD Screen around - £1
    Plastic and inner - £4
    Logistics - £2 per unit
    R & D - £0.25
    Call centres - £0.75
Wages and Salaries, POS - £0.49

It leaves you with around £34 profit per unit on average (I haven’t taken exchange rates into account as this is rough)

No the drop of for faulty stock, is an average of 4% but having a 100 million units sold I would say more like 6% so that would be 6 Million Units at an average cost of £61.49 per unit is a grand total of £368940000
Now when you are potentially playing with numbers like that you would be as underhanded as Apple.

Fellow MSE users, because the Apple Ipod brand is so strong having a few upset customers here and there, is not going to make a difference to the overall performance of a company like this.

People will keep on buying Apple Ipod products as they look the best, not worrying about warranty nor durability.

Companies have made hundreds of millions on the back of Ipods so this money train won’t slow down soon, but if we keep on paying over the odds for something that we can potentially acquire for a fraction of the price we are going to ensure that; when people like “Thebroker1980” complain it will be met with deaf ears.

I hope you all enjoyed reading this.

Broke my hand during training last night, so a bit delirious. ;)

I use the cheap as chips Philips for cycling. The in-line remote control(on the headphone wire) makes a lot of difference. Easy to switch off, change tracks and adjust volume without taking your eyes of the road.
Plus, in addition to the in built rechargable battery, in comes with a snap-on case/stand that takes a AAA battery. Also, comes with a lanyard, so that you can 'wear' it around your neck. 512MB is fine for training rides.

I'd just like to echo what Idiophreak said, in that its very dangerous to listen to an MP3 player while cycling, especially on main roads. Several people have been killed because they weren't concentrating, or couldn't hear the traffic over their music.

Myself, I can't recommend any specific mp3 player, but make sure to go with one that has flash memory. I know that when they were becoming popular, several were released with internal hard drives. The problem with these is that they don't like being nudged or dropped while playing. That said, I don't think any of the mainstream ones have hard drives now anyway.
