Has the makings of a great short story!

Possibly more suitable for the MSA, but here goes with my answer.

Our late, lamented, "Sam Black Mongrel" was clever enough to know that when the phone rang I would go to the office under the stairs and answer it, in those days it was corded. When this happened he would use the lever handle to open the back door and go walkabout.

Current dog, Miss Leigh, went missing behind an empty factory a couple of weeks ago and an hour later was seriously sick, now thankfully recovered. From now on, she's on lead for that bit along the canal.

My hamster escaped once. We found her a few hours later hiding in my dad's underwear drawer.

The dog escaped once during some building work. He was only a few months old and I was devastated. The local paper ran a story a few days later, he was missing over the weekend, and it turned out someone had found him and taken him in. We got him back 4 days later!

I lost my dog for a month once after she got out after the gate wasn't fastened properly. Somebody phoned and reported seeing her after I blanketed the area with leaflets and I was so grateful that I took him chocolates and a bottle of Scotch. I realised later that he'd probably found her a month earlier and kept her until he realised she'd be spotted with him once everybody'd seen the leaflets.

I lost my cat for 10 days, thought she'd gone for ever. The tom cat 2 doors down was beating her up. We hunted for hours/days, then one day my friend had just left my house and saw my cat 300yds up the road, I ran as fast as I could, she was in a bramble hedge so we through a blanket over the hedge and my friend went in to get her - I grabbed her and put her in my friends car before she could run away - i think she'd basically got too scared to come home because of the tom cat beating her up. Another of my cats went out one night and never came home, we never found her.
Then once I thought i'd lost my dog. We'd only been at the house a week, it was a big farm house surrounded by a huge garden, fields and no neighbours, I let the dogs out at the end of the night for toilet, went in to turn the tv off and when i went back out to call the dogs my eldest dog had gone, i searched for more than half an hour, it was pitched black, then i saw her cowering in one of the bushes shaking and trembling - she is terrified of flies and i think when i let her out there were a lot of moths around the outside house light and they'd scared her - that fear that i felt for those 30 minutes I will never forget.

When I was a kid (hundreds of years ago!) we offered to look after the school hamster during the holidays. We were having some building work done on the house at the time and the hamster escaped or got let out from the cage (not sure which!) and went "missing". We searched every where for days and couldn't find it. I was worried about going back to school with an empty hamster cage.

A few days after the disappearance, we kept hearing scratching noises coming from a wall. We got the builders back who opened up part of the wall and out popped a hamster covered in dust but pouches full and seemed in good health. He lived for a year after his adventure!
