Low Disk Space

Ok Sp2 running but still low memory. Does anyone know what the above Window Media Run Format is, or anything else I can get rid of.
Thanks0 -
If its running slowly, reducing the screen resolution may help.
If its disc space, reducing the amount reserved for the recycle bin is an easy tweek, right click bin, choose properties, local disk and drag the slider.0 -
I'm not sure what Window Media Run Format is. I don't see why you would need it if you dont use it. How big is it?0

This sounds like the problem I had with SP2, in the end I gave up. How did you get it to work Party_Animal?0

I haven't a clue, as most of you know, I downloaded it and its working fine, but I know there's not much memory left. I tried reducing some of the things on start up by using selective startup. Now I get a message every time telling me I'm running SYS Con Utility and to return to normal mode, yet the things I wanted rid of have gone. Bottom line is everything seems to be working fine.
When I look at Windows Remove to see what to get rid of, the biggest things seem to be Works, Nero ( which I need) and Window Media.
Thanks to all for your help.0 -
Right I've got rid of as much as I dare. I've now got 11% free and I'd like to get some more. Defrag needs 15%. This is what I need;
Firefox and Thunderbird
Word
Excel
Nero
Windows Media Player
Norton
My music, photos and documents are stored on D drive so does anyone know of anything else I can get rid of?
What about the Windows games e.g. Hearts and Freecell. I don't need these. Can I get rid of them?
Thanks, all help appreciated. I am learning, albeit slowly.0 -
Replace Norton with a less bloated system. AVAST!0

Nex0 is right - get a new hard disk. You can get rid of loads of detritus but will soon run out of space again. Try here - http://computerprices.pricegrabber.co.uk/search_getprod.php/masterid=615468 - an excellent 80 gig drive for less than 38 quid. 80 gig really should be a minimum though, get bigger if you can afford it. Install XP afresh and whilst we are talking about minimums, if you can, upgrade your ram to at least 512meg. WinXP really likes a gig of ram but 512 should be the minimum here.
Dont know your motherboard or your memory config but you may only need to stick in another 256 stick. Check https://www.crucial.com/uk, they have a memory advisor tool which is superb. You might need to spend only 20-30 quid to get up to 512 meg.
For "surfing the net, playing music and photos" doing these 2 things should be all you need to do. If you edit your photos on a big scale then you may need to do more. If you have a lot of photos and just store them on ya compy to look at then the bigger the drive the better.
Good Luck with it.
Cheers NMI am silently correcting your grandma.0 -
you can use a free tool called treesize, this give lists all the folders and file sizes on your computer and gives a good indication of what is really using up all that space. It's only a small program and uses no resources when you aren't using it.
The system restore uses alot of space for each restore point it creates, which can be many after a while, have you removed all but the most recent restore point? (Disk clean up wizard-> "more options" -> system resore "cleanup")0
