Thompson don't have any flights until May and Thomas Cook have one option for a fortnight but it's £1,900 all inclusive so isn't for me.
Have a look at Nicaragua. Going there at the end of April for 4 weeks.
Got return flights from LHR via Houston @ £468 each with United Airlines, with a 3 hour layover each way.
I booked the flights on a whim, so have only just started planning. But including accommodation, meals, internal travel, and spending money for the full 4 weeks our total spend will be no more than £1.5-£2k in addition to the flights.
I've started planning on Trip Advisor, and can already count to 10 in Spanish.:) To get us off in the right direction we'll be staying at this place for the first couple of nights...

The bloke who runs it is from the USA, and seems to be a wealth of genuine knowledge of all things Nicaraguan.0 -
Thanks, Pete. I shall look at this too.
The only place that I've been where only Spanish (and Guarani) was spoken was Paraguay and I managed to get by somehow despite only knowing a handful of words. I'm hopeless with languages.0 -
I'm limited as to when I can go and Iberia doesn't look great to me as all of the return legs that I've managed to find take 25+ hours and they're not particularly cheap.
KLM are a better option as they've got more flights than Virgin but it's more or less the same price.
I can go for just a week on Virgin 17-24/2 for £706. It's not as long as I'd like but I am supposed to be looking for a job so taking a fortnight out wouldn't be the best choice at this stage (I've only been back home a month after 6 weeks down under).
I've finally got the awful Virgin Atlantic website to give me an option with airmiles and I can get 15-24/2 for £812 plus a few miles.
I can't decide at the moment and don't want to rush into things. I might even be able to get two separate one way flights cheaper.
BA/Iberia

Thanks for that. I'll look later although ideally I wouldn't return on 27 February as that's my birthday and although I'm nt a huge celebrator of my birthday I don't really want to spend it bored on a plane on my own.0

You'd be on the plane mostly on the 28th. You don't seem too keen on this trip. Looking later when you have just three weeks beforehand.0 -

Land in good time to celebrate your birthday

It looks like going independent is dirt cheap once you are there.
Rum is very cheap; beer is a dollar a bottle; meals can be very affordable or expensive depending on your preferences.
However, accommodation is almost never less than about US$20 - 25 per night in a casa (more in any kind of hotel, and for less comfort). Those prices are for double rooms so it becomes affordable for a couple, but for a solo traveller those costs are higher than for many other long-haul destinations.0 -

I really appreciate all of the advice but my thinking now is that it's too far to go for less than a fortnight. Looking at my diary I don't have a clear fortnight until the end of June (I go to the theatre a lot) and I prefer to spend the British summer here.
I think that I'm right in thinking that autumn is hurricane season so I'll look into going next spring instead.
As I say, all this is very useful and I'll keep it in mind for next year.0
