How about places along the North London Line, where you'd change at Willesden Junction for Watford, such as Acton, Chiswick (Gunnersbury), Hampstead, Finchley.

On transport prices between Watford and Zone One. If you're not going to do the direct Euston to Watford Junction journey, then I imagine your travel costs would be more or less the same no matter where you lived?

I did the same journey to you (opposite directions morning and evening) some time ago, but don't have any recent experience with fares. My experience is before London Midland allowed Oyster. At one point it was £29.50 cheaper to go from Watford Met to Zone 1 than from Watford Junction to Zone 1 on weekly travelcards, with a 100% guaranteed seat in both directions on the Met Line route. I alternated from the two stations each week (the extra time was definitely worth the money back then, but I had to walk past the Junction on my way to the Met and couldn't bear to do it more than I financially needed to). I doubt the price difference is drastic enough to make that worth considering nowadays though.

As for your plan, the advantage to being at say, Queen's Park, is that if the Overground lets you down the Bakerloo line will get you to Harrow, and from there you could get lucky with a fast train, the train problem might have sorted itself out, and the 258 bus is always a nuclear option is no train will get you to Watford.
