EDF Energy/Buchanan Clark & Wells

Options
I moved out of a studio apartment a few months back. When i phoned EDF energy to inform them that i was moving i gave them my metre reading. They mentioned that I owed them around £200 as i have gone over my usage during my 10 month stay in the property.

This is a studio apartment with a 13 story block which is around 8 years old its well insulated and i lived on the 4th floor so there was no need to have the radiator on as i was getting heat from others below. The only thing that i used was the hot water tank for the shower and for washing up/washing machine.

I was paying around £40 a month on electric ( No gas in the block). I use to live in the same block 3 years ago but in a 1 bed apartment and only paid £35 a month electric and when i left back then EDF said i was in credit.

I am now being pestered by buchanan clark and wells as i told EDF that i won't be paying the £200 especially for a small apartment. Buchanan clark and wells are saying that if i pay today i can pay £175 and that'll be final does this sound legit?? This has been going on for the past 4 months and i still haven't paid. I've also received numerous amounts of letters from then.

What should i do?

Pay before they go further .
It was up to you to sort the debt out before it was passed on .

On what grounds are you disputing the bill? I am afraid the argument that 'especially for a small apartment' will not result in the hounds being called off. You need to check exactly how much energy you have used - based on the meter readings when you moved in and out of the property - and if the bill is correct, pay up and move on. Its a hard World out there and your monthly payments were nothing more than 'best guess' payments on account.

It's very simple. I assume you have your opening and closing readings? If so, check these against the billing you have received. If the readings are correct, and the calculation also, you have no grounds to dispute it. £40 per month for a single rate tariff is absurdly low. If you don't have an opening read, then you cannot verify the bill
Unfortunately if the debt has already been sold on then your credit record is possibly now trashed for the next 6 years. That's going to cost you much more than a £200 bill.
It appears that you never submitted any meter readings during your stay and the result is invariably a big catch up bill at the end. The supplier only has to read every two years.
If you post your actual kWh usage over the ten months then meaningful advice can be given.

OP - post your actual opening and closing readings together with Tariff details and how much you actually paid

OP is either trolling or they know the above posters were right about not posting the correct readings if at all any were submitted

I think the OP belongs to the group that says that someone else is at fault and must pay for my own naivety, ignorance or laziness (which they won't admit)

Still no response from the OP

I wonder if the debt of £118 is the balance of an old debt that was being collected by the prepayment and when OP swopped £118 was still outstanding.

If it was me i would pay the £118 rather than have my credit report trashed - and then argue the case (if there is one, which I dont think there is)
