I suggest you get a good, recommended local painter :)

I'd avoid gloss for a number of reasons. #1 it stinks to high heaven and will take ages for the smell to go, #2 it takes that much longer to dry properly, #3 the white gloss at least turns a yellow/cream over time so colour holding not great. #4, brushes are a pain to clean thoroughly afterwards

Silk is a much better bet for walls, and better than the matt, gives a nice finish and goes on well with a roller or brush. It looks nice plus it's easy to wash. In a home with 5 animals I can testify to it standing up to the challenge of mucky paws and regular cleaning of walls and doors with a damp cloth/cleaning fluid.

    Hope this helps. Happy decorating;)

    Thanks.

Originally, the walls were painted matt magnolia. Can i put silk on this with no side effect?

I dislike silk. If your wall aren't perfect it will show every single imperfection in the light.

It's also much better at attracting condensation than matt for some reason. I think because it doesn't allow the walls to breathe.

Satinwood on woodwork and matt emulsion on walls for me.

I agree that silk will show imperfections, but definitely go for a durable paint that states on the tin that it is wipe clean, washable or can be scrubbed.

Agree with above post matt for walls.

Dulux do a great paint called Endurance which is very tough once dried.

  • Agree with the above comments, silk will show imperfections in walls slightly more than matt, but if the walls have imperfections you'll still see them with matt.

Satinwood is interesting for wood. I only started using it last year on recommendation from a decorator. If you're going to use it on wood that has had gloss on it, you'll need to either sand the surface first or apply a primer. I've tried putting satinwood directly on glossed windowsills and it doesn't look great. The brush strokes are quite obvious, more so than on the doors that had the primer first. So far the satinwood is holding up to regular cleaning from paws too!

Matt for walls and quick drying gloss/satin for woodwork.
Don't limit yourself to magnolia, there are some really nice alternatives.

I can add a vote for satinwood. Changed from gloss after the warnings of it fading to a nicotine yellow, but tbh I probably prefer the satin finish now it's on.

Got my paint from Dulux here http://www.duluxdecoratorcentre.co.uk/instore/index.jsp in one of their tones, and because the entire house is beige varied it a bit.

(Next task is masking off the spindels when I'm brave enough to be convinced the paint won't peel off with the masking tape...!)

If you have already got magnolia walls I would try using Dulux trade diamond. Fully washable which has been a big help with children's hand marks. I know it's more expensive than the run of the mill stuff but I've found worth it. I had to cover a darker colour so used a cheap emulsion as a base coat then 2 coats of diamond. Also you can find it cheaper on line rather than a decorators merchant. I would think magnolia everywhere would be boring, but each to their own.
