Warning light comes up - garage saying it isn't an issue

I recently bought a secondhand Toyota Urban Cruiser, nice car just what I wanted.

About a month after I bought the car the orange spanner warning light came on while I was driving to work. Bit of a worry, so checked the manual and found that this was the light indicating that an oil change was needed.

Went into the garage and was told that this was probably because they had carried out a service before it was due! Took it into the workshop and supposedly reset it.

All was well for about a week when the selfsame thing happened again - once more telephoned and arranged to take it in.

Once more in the workshop - no faults on the computer so there's nothing they can do. Assured that it isn't a fault, an oil change was supposedly done at the 60,000 mile service before they got the car so they didn't do another one.

I am now driving around with the warning light blinking most of the time. It comes on after I've been driving about 10 - 15 minutes and the car has warmed up.

Should I take what they say as accurate, that there isn't an issue and not to worry? the car has a 3 month warranty, and I'm halfway through that, I don't want to be landed with expensive repairs once it's out of its warranty period.

  • Ask them to clean the air intake throttle body and reset the ecu by disconnecting the battery.
I do Contracts, all day every day.

Don't believe them. Get it looked at by another garage, preferably by a Toyota main dealer. They are either telling you porkies or their machine isn't reading the codes.

IIRC this is one of the symptoms of a rising oil level issue with some of the 1.4 diesel Toyota engines. A combination of factors including EGR problems and failing DPF regenerations due to short runs and inappropriate ECU programming causes the oil level to rise due to diesel contaminating the engine lubricant.

Pretty sure there was a Toyota TSB about it. Might be worth asking a Toyota dealer about the problem (specifically asking them about any TSBs appropriate to the model) as if it is the one I'm thinking about, the fix was a major piece of work which would, out of warranty, potentially be a four-figure fix.

ETA: Yep, quick Google suggests there is a TSB, and it may well be applicable if this is a diesel, but the OP doesn't say. The TSB reference is EG-0017T-0411, it seems.
  • Have you tried resetting yourself it is on page 347 of the Urban cruiser owners manual.

if it is a diesel as BeenThroughItAll suggests then i would be looking at sump oil levels very carefully
i dont even think ive seen one of these vehicles?
  • Yes this is a diesel model. Will definitely contact a Toyota dealer tomorrow. Many thanks for your help.

same boat as you (same county it seems aswell!) I have a different car though and im always checking the oil obsessively, the sump is starting to rise slowly. Critical to get it in to a garage ASAP. Cant believe the garage told you that. If you keep driving it around with the light flashing the oil level will eventually spill over and your turbo could start eating it
Even a stopped clock tells the right time twice a day, and for once I'm inclined to believe Withnail is right. We are indeed drifting into the arena of the unwell.
  • Thank you everyone for your help - once I started quoting the TSB and number they became more helpful. I am taking it in on Monday for another look, but if I am still getting the light then will take it in to the Toyota dealer in Plymouth for their opinion.

    LOL
    Based on what...
Whilst you're there op ask them to check your tyre pressure, see if that works!
Maybe you could atleast establish whether its a petrol or diesel first
