Balance transfer error

Hi

Does anyone have any advice about this problem...

Last August I got a new credit card from Post Office with free balance transfer and interest for 18month. The reason I did this was to transfer money from my Santander credit card which was no longer interest free.

In error, completely foolishly, when doing the balance transfer I put the details of my current account by mistake. Instead of this getting rejected, the sum of money (£2k) ended up on my Post office credit card but did not come out of my current account.

Therefore it looks like I owe Post Office money but don't :(

I have contacted them several times and am now talking to the complaints department with no luck. The first operative said they just need to do a recall to my bank to cancel out the payment. It's been 5 months and this has still not occurred. I have ended up putting additional funds on to my Post office credit card so as to not pay off the mistaken amount. I am meeting the payments on these and they will soon end, leaving me with what looks like £2k to pay. If I don't make any payments to this they will start charging me and destroy my credit rating.

Does anyone have any advice on what to do? who could help me with this? Or similar stories which were remedied and how!?

Thanks in advance

    Transfer balance (debt)?

Details (long number) of your debit card?

    Balance (debt), not money?

Complain first, then take the case to FOS if needed.

I think PO is one of the most incompetent financial companies around.

I'm guessing you wanted to do a £2,000 balance transfer from your Santander credit card to your Post Office credit card, but you mistakenly entered your bank account debt card number instead of your Santander credit card number during the transfer process.

You've now ended up with a balance of -£2,000 on your Post Office credit card: £2,000 has gone missing.

If I were you I'd complain to Post Office credit cards in writing:

    Post Office Money Credit Cards
    Customer Care Team
    PO Box 3191
    Bristol, BS1 9HY

Then, take it up with the FOS if they can't sort it out.

You shouldn't have let this carry on for five months.

Presumably Santander have received a payment of £2000 into the account which they use to receive credit card payments, and the reference for the payment is the OP's debit card number. Aren't Santander responsible for finding this missing money and giving it back to the OP?

It's not the Post Office's fault that the OP messed up...

[STRIKE]Santander[/STRIKE] your bank is responsible for finding only on PO request.

Partly it's PO fault because it's not a rocket science by a card number to see if it's debit or credit.
Regardless, only PO can trace the money and demand it back, not a customer.
  • Thanks for the replies,

Grumbler... 1)Yes to transfer the balance from Santander
    2) I input my full debit card number by mistake,
    3) debt indeed so I'm -£2k

Snow Tiger, my credit card reads -£2000 and basically it's imaginary money as no funds left my current account.

JD87, Santander had nothing to do with this as the -£2k debt was still on their credit card, PO attempted to pay my current account instead of Santander. I have since paid This £2k off my Santander card and now the PO want me to pay it too! It was totally my error to begin with but surely it should not take this long to sort?

I have rang numerous operatives who kept assuring me it was a simple recall they needed to do (which one person told me 5 working days then the next person 10weeks!!) with My current account but it still hasn't been done. I complained to customer care 2 months ago and the case is still ongoing.

Post Office have been so difficult to deal with, every person you call give you a different answer. Probably to get you off the phone.

Really appreciate your help guys, I will try FOS

You wouldn't have expected funds to leave your current account. You'd have expected 2k to go INTO your current account.

Given your confusion over which way money was supposed to be going, can you confirm that no money went into your current account?
  • Yes, sorry, my typing mistake. Zero funds went in to my current account.
