Single trip insurance confusion

Hello lovely forum people!
I'm very confused about travel insurance.... Single trip is all I need for a holiday in June......However Martin always says that you should get travel insurance from that day you book your holiday (today, in this case). but the holiday is not for 6 months yet- so to be covered from today, would I not need to get annual cover? Or can you be covered from today and then just also specify separately the date of the actual holiday?
Sorry, never done this before!
Thanks in advance for any guidance.

Hi. I have just booked a holiday in June. I have paid a hotel deposit and paid for the flights. I took out a single trip policy last week which covers the week in question. If I have to cancel in a month's time, say for medical reasons, then I would be able claim back what I have already paid out less any excesses. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. You just take out holiday insurance cover for the start to the end of your actual holiday (e,g, for 7 days) but by taking it out on the day you book then, so long as you don't remove cancellation cover, if you meet with some mishap between booking and going away and have to cancel the holiday, your insurance should pay out under the terms of the 'Cancellation' cover which starts from when you take out the policy. (well in an ideal world they would pay out; they often find excuses for not paying so it seems)0

Another point is that you generally get charged more if you buy on the eve of departure instead of well in advance.0
