laptop spec .. or broadband ..... what is it that determines how fast website pages load ??

Running a HP 255 laptop .. windows 7 professional.. 4gb ram .. amd-a4 proc 1.5gh

it has aol 9.7 software ... and IE 11

Broadband is Virgin fibre running at 30-50mb ..

Yet using internet it seems sooo slow on websites waiting for pages to load .

What needs doing / changing .... to improve .. and make it much faster to use ?

why do you need aol cluttering up your system? , have you checked "addons" and default search providers in IE and how many "tool bars" are installed

you have omitted to say what "your" internet connection speed is?

control panel/network and sharing /connections , speed please?

  • I'd put money on the DNS servers being slow - that was always the case when I was with VM. Try changing the DNS servers - I'd recommend using a combination of Google and OpenDNS.

I would suggest the OP supplies more details before condemning VM

It can be any number of things, in addition to the last posters notes

    1. reboot yr router by turning off and restarting after 10 secs
    2. See what programs load at startup, press together the windows key and R key to get the run box, and type msconfig - look at start tab and close all options other than yr antivirus options.
3.AOL should be removed, you can get the same via yr browser, try something other than IE11, suggest Chrome.
4, when on the net goto http://speedtest.btwholesale.com/ and if you're getting over say 3mbps then its probably yr PC/laptop
    5. Cleanup yr PC, download and run CCleaner, then clean yr C drive and defrag
    6. If its still slow goto the control panel, admin tools, event manager, windows logs and see what errors you see - some may be ignored others may be impacting yr system - you would need to post back if you see errors there.

    Hope it helps
  • There is no PC spec that will slow down your Internet speed unless you use a 14k modem and that would be the modem.
Have you scanned the PC with malwarebytes / adwcleaner / JRT.
Then remove AOL carp change your anti-virus and browser, then install a custom hosts file too from MVPS
    Edited:
and don't use Virgins DNS use 8.8.8.8/8.8.4.4 (googles) or Opendns

    Yes and no.

I agree that checking for malware is one of the first things to do. A good indication of viruses etc is the overall slowing down of a PC, sometimes quite suddenly.

However the general build up of carp, especially if you don't have much RAM, with too many processes open at the same time can make a PC generally slow to respond with pages also opening slowly. So a general cleanup inc malware removal, is probably the most likely cause (assuming internet speed tests indicate no line problems). This would be the probable cause

It is possible that the DNS servers are playing up but is not a frequent cause of issues. The following 3 commands then a reboot may also help. Do this in the admin prompt (with admin rights)

    ipconfig /flushdns
    netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt
    netsh winsock reset

    Close & reboot

Doubt it's Virgins DNS...Never had any trouble with them.
This is what I'm getting (Wireless connection) at the moment with Virgin.

If PC is ruled out, suggest contacting VM and ask them to sort it. Most of the problems I've had and there haven't been many, have been sorted quickly over the phone and have been problems with the line..

A lot of ISPs have terrible DNS servers - honestly. Virgin were amongst the worst when I was with them. It's well worth checking the performance and configuring your connection to the best server. Thers's an app called namebench than can help with this.
