Tiling has always been a diy job but with more and more stone coming into the UK it is more of a professional task.
If you are looking for a good tiler i would like to give you some tips to find out if the job is going to be done to a satisfactory level.....
It is a simple set of questions that will distinguish a good trades man from a bad one.
1 - Does the tiler know and abide by the British standards 5385 for setting out a room, and 5980 for adhesives and grouts.
2 - Does the tiler understand waterproofing membranes for showers and why they are a requirement. (new building regs June 2007)
3 - Does the floor fixer understand Part E regs 2003 for sound proofing under hard wearing floors.
4 - Does the fixer know about the recommended safe weights for plaster 20kg per meter and plasterboard 32kg per meter.
5 - Does the fixer understand that adhesive and grout is not water proof but only water resistant and what implications this has.
6 - why is epoxy resin based grout better than normal grout.
7 - If fixing non glazed tiles does the fixer know and understand their requirements for sealing.
8 - Why are water based sealers more beneficial than solvent based in all areas but one.
9 - Does the fixer know the different levels of flexibility within adhesives and grouts.
10 - Does my porcelain need a sealer - if the immediate response is no be aware. If polished it ceratainly will.
Alot of knowledge goes along way...... Beware the rogue tradesman that cannot answer these simple questions.......
Hope this helps
If you need any advice in tiling please post and i will help you out....

Again correct.....:T
even stronger direct fixing to render, brick, or block...
My point is that people dont need to spend extra dosh on a skim on the plaster board when the tiler can fix direct and it is stronger..
