    Personally I usually transfer all personal data files to an external hdd (not forgetting emails/contacts too), then copying back when when the new OS is installed. Be careful of programs like Family Tree which store data in its own folders rather than the usual My Docs etc.

    For the data;

    Take the hard drive out of the old machine, and install it as a secondary drive in the new one.

    Either leave it there, and access the data there, or copy/paste the data to the primary drive, returning the old drive to the old machine when done.

    To which 'settings' do you refer?

    If, by settings, you mean e-mail and browser favourites, you can export them from your old machine to a USB and then import them to your new machine.

    OR, if OP follows #4, they can be copy/pasted directly between the drives.

    This assumes your new pc is a desktop, if its a laptop, then this wouldn't work. However if you acquired a suitable USB enclosure, not expensive, you would be able to copy stuff over etc.. An advantage of this is that once you've completed the transfer, you can then use the old hdd for backups (assuming it is clean).

    Acknowledged. I assumed the OP's PCs to be desktops.
