Hello there
I hope someone will be able to help. My son has recently split up with his fianc!e and come back home to live. They have a Santander 123 account in joint names., can my son switch to a new account with First Direct in his own name ? if so how will this affect their old account as I was under the impression it automatically closes that one.Can it be done without closing the old one as his ex-fianc!e is staying in the house they rented together and the related direct debits come out of this account ?
Thank you in advance

Joint accounts cannot be switched to sole accounts.
Your son needs to get a clean split of the finances, e.g. get his name removed from the account or they need to close the account altogether. This should be done as a matter of urgency and requires the agreement of your son's ex.
He can independently apply for one or more accounts in his own name.0 -
This ... requires the agreement of your son's ex.if the joint account is operated on an either signature basis, we can take instructions to close the joint account from either account holder.
Most accounts do operate on the above basis.0 -

Nope.
Provided the account isn't overdrawn he can close it on his own.DEBT FREE!
