E On - new meter

E On are proposing to replace their meters with the associated promise of cheaper bills and notification of energy use. Is changing mandatory/ a good idea? Will it affect my ability to change provider in future?

No it won't stop you changing. But smart meters are not compatible between suppliers, so if you do swap subsequently, it may revert to being a 'dumb' meter. However a smart meter will not automatically reduce your bills, though it will give you more detailed info about your usage, which may enable you to reduce your consumption.

Is it a credit meter or do you pay after you use the energy e.g. direct debit/quarterly bill in arrears?

Does the letter from E.on state if it is a SMART meter?

How does the E.on letter PROMISE you will save money?

Sorry for the list of questions, but without more details any advice offered would be questionable.

Is it a promise or a suggestion. A new meter won't actually save you money whatever it is unless it under reads or they give you a discount for having it.

As said a smart meter can help you save money by making you aware of your consumption but it's down to you to decide what to turn off & on.

Does it really matter what sort of meter you've got, whether smart or dumb you've got to have one and by having meter info sent directly to the supplier you should get more accurate billing.

If you change supplier then it becomes a dumb meter - you haven't lost anything except the real time billing and it wont cost you any more.

There's a lot of rubbish spouted about smart meters. In my opinion they are a good thing and the sooner they are rolled out the better. They'd save a lot of people getting into difficulties with estimated bills as they'd be paying for what they use rather than relying on estimates
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers

    Hi SueE,

I hope you don’t mind me popping on here and giving you some advice?

Are we changing your meter to a smart meter or a like for like meter?

If we’re changing it for a smart meter, it’s totally up to you if you want this fitted, but there are lots of benefits for having this type of meter.

We’ve got lots of information on our website about smart meters that might interest you.

You can still change supplier, you’re not tied down with a contract with us, the only thing, if you change supplier your meter won’t work in a smart way.

If we’re changing a like for like meter, it’s because your meter has come to end of it’s life and needs replacing.

Again you won’t be tied down to any contacts with us and you’ll be free to leave as you wish.

I hope this helps and if you have any questions, please let me know.

    Amy:)

The suppliers are not really behind this smart meter revolution.

I would suggest that you refuse a smart meter until the energy industry has got it's act together and the latest spec smart meters that allow switching between suppliers are actually being fitted.
