I've got a Nescafe Dolce Gusto machines that uses pods to make various drinks. Unfortunately at the weekend I unknowingly put a duff pod in there which was not sealed properly and the drink overflowed into the inside of the machine. Okay, I had a feel:D of the inside top of the pod bit. There should be a rubber seal on the machine, well there is on mine you can feel the rubber bit. I believe this it to stop a back flow into the machine. If your machine does not have that then the machine might be at fault.
