Can I reclaim PPI from Alliance & Leicester

My partner was mis-sold PPI several years ago when he took out a loan with Alliance & Leicester. He did look into reclaiming a while back but gave up as they no longer existed.
I'm trying one last ditch attempt to help him - is it possible to reclaim PPI from A&L? If so, who would I need to contact?
Also, we don't have the loan reference number either as he shredded all the paperwork once the loan was repaid.
Is this a lost cause??
Thanks!

How long ago is "several" years?
How did he get the loan - a broker, in the bank, online?
Alliance & Leicester complaints go to Santander, if they have no record of this loan then without your own records your complaint is over.
Ring Santander tomorrow and ask (he will have to do it as it was his loan), details here

Also do note it is a complaint about a miss-sale, you do not "reclaim" anything, you have to explain why you felt it was miss-soldSam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:
People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
