Hi, looking for some advice, I have maxed my barclaycard visa out and subsequently moved overseas, I dont have a valid c/c to check my credit rating with experian / equifax but am planning on returning to the UK, how can I find out whether I have a ccj or what my current credit rating is?

You don't need a credit card to check your credit rating, just write a cheque for £2 and post it to them with your request.
  • Thanks, problem being Im still overseas and dont have an active bank account in the UK from which to make the payment, all I really want to know is whether having defaulted on repayments will I have problems opening another bank account (savings / current) with other providers?.
I dont need access to credit at this time and will make repayments on my outstanding Barclaycard account once I return to the uk

You can purchase a postal order from the post office and send it off. If you have ccj's on your report you will have problems gaining a bank account but you can apply for a basic bank account without credit facilities.

The CRA's will only send your report to your 'registered' address. OP will have to satisfy them he lives at the address he wants the report sent to, by sending passport, driving licence, utility bill etc...and that's going to be difficult since they are living "overseas".

I would suggest the best course of action would be to contact the CRA's directly to see what the best approach would be.

how recently did you move overseas? I would consider contacting barclaycard and explaining that you are abroad but you do intend to repay when you return. They may be in the process of thinking of getting a CCJ against you and you may be able to stop them by being honest with them.
You might also want to consider making at least small payments in the mean time to them to demonstrate that you are dealing with the debt.

They will probably have you in default of your agreement and be adding on interest and missing payments charges and stuff.

When you move back here you will then be able to request your credit report with a postal order for payment (it says so on the application form). In the past I have had to send them a copy of mypassport and 2 original proofs of address in order to get my credit card.
  • I would email the CRA's via the contact section on the relevant websites. There is a provision for checking your UK files after a period of living abroad as I have done this myself in the past. However it was a few years ago and I do not remember the exact details.

From the Experian 'Credit Report Help Centre'...
I don't reside in the UK. Can I still apply for a copy of my credit report?

You can apply for a copy of your credit report if you live outside the UK, providing you are asking about a previous UK address.
    1. Print a copy of our application form. You need Adobe® Reader® to open the printable form.
    2. Complete the application, including your full name, present address, and any other addresses you lived at in the UK during the last six years.
    3. Enclose a cheque or postal order for £2.00 made payable to Experian Ltd.
    4. Send the application and payment to Experian Ltd, Consumer Help Service, PO Box 8000, Nottingham, NG80 7WF.
As you are currently living overseas you should send original documentation connecting you to your present address and previous UK address (eg, bank statement, tenancy agreement, solicitor's letter, or recent utility bill in your name), as well as a copy of your birth certificate, passport, or driving licence.
Presumably the other two CRA's offer the same facility.
  • Thanks for all the info, I have to admit this was a rather stupid lack of action on my part, I left the Uk about 4 years ago and just "forgot" to make payment on my outstanding balance (about 1000GBP) so Im guessing Im pretty much in the muck by now, anyone have any ideas how much this migh cost me to get out of (I know the CCJ will remain for 6 years (i think) however would I be facing any criminal charges on my return?...I really dont want to come back to the uk just to have a holiday at pollsmoor!
  • Well I did contact Barclays and they have advised there is a default notice on the debt but I can still make payment as the debt has not been sold off as yet, so there goes two thousand quid, guess you live and learn. Is there any "guaranteed" way of getting a default listing removed prior to the 6 year period having passed?....

Thanks again to all the info and advice supplied..
