Clicking Noise In Heating Pipes

I recently had a new radiator installed upstairs and for last couple of nights I've been woken up by a 'clicking' noise which seems to be coming from the pipes.

Am I right in thinking that it's the pipes expanding under the pressure of the heat that's catching the floorboards or can it be something else that's causing it.

What do you recommend I do to stop the 'clicking?'

Clicking is normally heating/cooling leading to expansion/contraction of the pipes. It could also be the radiator itself. There may be some experienced heating engineers along to tell you how to fix it, although I suspect it is something that should have been done at installation.

Normally it's either the pipework, or expansion on the brackets that hold it on to the wall. I believe there's supposed to be a plastic insert that sits on the bracket, but they're usually missing. I always used a few rounds of electrical tape before reseating.

If it's the pipes, you basically need make the notches a little larger, and ideally lag the pipes around that area.
  • is there anything I can wrap around the pipe to stop it from making the clicking noise?
  • Was it just a new rad or new rad plus pipework?

    just the new pipework
  • You need to see where the new pipework might be rubbing against something (like a floorboard, joist, wall) and as Grenage said, introduce a bit of reduced friction material (ie lagging) to allow the pipe to expand without restriction. However, even if you do all this, you might still get some clicking.

you can buy clips to hold the pipes if that helps?
or wrap a few socks in different areas instead of clips and see if it cures it.

i used my kids (when he was a toddler) old shoe and it worked.:rotfl::rotfl:

  • I've bought some hair felt and hope that does the trick to stop the clicking
