Arguing with online retailer - am I in the right?

  • But you knew you would need to eat that night, people usually eat every evening and I feel sure you do, too, so you could have ordered your food from the supermarket the day before to be delivered that day, knowing you would need to be at home anyway.
Sorry to be blunt but you have overreacted and with pre planning and a bit of organisation and more care you could have avoided giving yourself all this bother.

But they couldn't call you, could they? You made an error.

Yes, we've already established that, I made an error. But they clearly wouldn't call me to arrange a suitable time when the time quoted is "0830 - 1730".

If they had tried to call me in the morning to arrange a time, they'd have discovered my number was wrong and emailed me, rather than the problem coming to light at 1820, by which time it was too late.

My wife had been away on business since Sunday and wasn't due back until today, but she came back a day early. And I wanted to cook something nice. Beans on toast didn't seem so special.

So, in your opinion, at what point in the evening could I have left the house? I think I left around 6pm which was clearly far too early.

I don't agree with Running On Empty's comments. He makes it sound like you should have planned the day weeks in advance with military precision.

OP messed up on the phone number, but had the retailer attempted contact BEFORE the delivery attempt (as stated on their own website) this would have come to light and been resolved - on top of that the courier was late anyway and due to lack of any sort of tracking system (OP hasn't mentioned this) there was no way for the OP to actually verify if it was coming or not. OP waited the full extent of the lengthy 9 hour delivery slot then went out (this is not unreasonable). Retailer is then being arsey about a refund which OP is perfectly entitle to regardless of reason.

OP provided the wrong number vs retailer failed to contact OP when stated (which would have lead to the discovery of the wrong number) and is arsey about a refund and courier company has an archaic system (no tracking) and was late

OP made 1 error, 4 errors made between the retailer and the courier.

No, no tracking system at all.

    I was incorrect - cut-off was 17:30 and I emailed at 17:34.

Reading through this thread it seems you are very good at giving out incorrect information and then expecting everyone else to make allowances for you.

I've been given a 9 hour slot before only to receive texts on the day giving more precise times. Guess you'll never know if they attempted that.

How about when you knew for sure what was happening with the delivery. Why rely on an email when the common sense approach would have been to phone and to speak to someone.

So, the seller has gone completely quiet and hasn't refunded me anything yet. How long do I wait until I start taking things further? And what should be my first course of action?
