Firstly I'm sure it has been answered a thousand times on here, so apologies for asking now.
It should be a simple Q for forum readers
I present was bought for me by my wife pre christmas from debenhams.
I opened it and it turns out to be faulty.
Wife did not keep receipt
so we take to be returned
Now are we entitled to a refund or a credit not only.
Wife has been in already and offered credit note, but ideally we want a refund.
many thanks

Credit Note only - if faulty as you can't prove payment.0 -
Without proof of purchase they don't have to even give a credit note as you can't prove it was even bought from them or when it was bought. Proof of purchase doesn't have to be a receipt and can be a bank statement instead.
Even with proof of purchase they can also insist on either a repair or exchange if it is more than 30 days since purchase so you wouldn't be guaranteed a refund even with a receipt it it has been longer.0 -
Without proof of purchase there's no way to tell how much was paid for the item in order to refund (or indeed to issue a credit note!). For example where I work we had a promotion in the run up to Christmas offering a common product with a price reduction, without proof of purchase it's impossible to know who paid what for said product.
It'll never cease to amaze me how many people don't keep receipts...Retired member - fed up with the general tone of the place.0 -
As above, strictly speaking, without any proof that your wife purchased the item or when and how much it was bought for, or even if it was purchased from Debenhams in the first place you're not "entitled" to anything. Take the credit note.0

How did your wife pay? If it was cash then the previous answers are correct. If it was by card then evidence from the card statement should be enough to tip the balance of probability your way.0

How do they know you've not nicked it?0
