    It's the binary series, i.e. 2,4,8,16,32,64..............

Everyone who has used a computer, knows that memory and other computers things come from this series. You don't need to be a maths grad to know this.

Yes lots of people learn by patterns and this series of numbers is extremely commonplace, there's no excuse for not knowing it.

If it's a tech job. Did you know it was? I didn't see that said anywhere.

People who "use" computers play on their iPad, maybe do some excel, but most don't have a clue about binary or powers of two or little endian or twos complement, or whatever else you want to say should be obvious. Techies would know these things, but I didn't see it said anywhere that this was a tech job.

I am looking for someone who can guess the square root of a number.

I could guess that .... but in an interview, no way. Not knowing I'd be thrown that curve ball, not a chance.

In an interview situation, I can come out with the daftest of replies!

Sitting down, non-interview, maths is a doddle to me..... in an interview I can make it look like I'm not really sure of my own name :)

Stop making good people fail. It makes you look bad.

A priori, it doesn't follow from
The approximate root of 256 is not an obvious number, but if you know what a square root is, you should know that the square root of 144 is 12. So it's obviously more than 12. Fairly obviously it's less than 20, and it isn't 15 either because 15^2 would end in a 5.

    that
So it must be more than 15 and less than 20, so about 17 or something.

Indeed, we haven't ruled out 14 yet.

    I've been Money Tipped!
Seriously doubt anyone buying in London recently is going to get their money back "many times over" :rotfl:

Are you talking next year or in 30 years?

Well, except that it ought to be possible to do 15 x 15 in your head, as it's only 150 + 75. This tells you that the root of 256 is more than 15. As noted it's also obviously less than 20 so all I am really looking for is somewhere in the middle. In fact, if they said the above they'd be doing OK.

Regrettably we have met people with Russell Group degrees who can't get this far, which I find a bit astonishing, but there it is.

As long as they don't crash by more than 78% I make it I'm clear.

If Carl's maths are in any way representative for today's youth, it's no wonder they're struggling. :)

Whats the term used when making an offer?

For such a tricky question, it required the skills of the main board veteran

    'offer' ?

Anyway looks like carl is going to join us on the housing ladder.

    All the best to him,

but judging by what we've seen so far, I think I might need to get the popcorn

When I joined this forum after being banned on HPC, I was told it was a much more sensible place than over there. Increasingly it is just seeming like the same nasty characters just on the opposite side of the housing bet.

In other words, why are you the way you are? Does it make you feel like a bigger man to be nasty? Did you get bullied at school?
