Utilities companies with different credit requirements?

Hi all,
This may not be the correct forum for this thread and the issue straddles two topics: credit ratings and utilities companies. If it's in the wrong place I trust a moderator will move it.
I was recently denied a new contract with a utility company because of bad credit (actually Experion rated me 'fair' but apparently that's bad enough). Historically I've had good credit, but have recently taken out a couple of credit cards to finance home improvements which, I assume, have contributed to a dip in my score. I'm taking steps to improve my rating, but in the meantime I'm left with this pay as you go meter that is clearly charing me far more than is ideal. So my question is:
Are some utilities companies less stringent with their credit rating requirements than others? I could just go to them one by one but thought I'd ask here first as that process can take ages.
Thanks in advance!

Taking out two credit cards should not stop you swapping utility providers. I've taken out loads of different credit cards over the years and never had such problems.
Have you checked your credit history to make sure there are no negative entries you were unaware of?
I'm assuming you are making at least the minimum payments on your credit cards?0
