Civil partnerships for straight couples

Do you think they should change the law? Does anyone here want a civil partnership instead of a marriage?

“We both object to marriage as an institution. I consider it historically oppressive and smothered in sexism. It’s symbolically associated with religion and patriarchy and we don’t want that cultural baggage.
“It’s the giving away of the bride, with her playing the role of the unspoilt virgin in white. There’s also an automatic assumption you’ll adopt the groom’s name. It didn’t feel right.”
I can't help but think they're making a mountain out of a molehill. They don't have to do any of the things they listed to get married! If all they want is the legal part, does the history and traditional background of marriage really matter?

Yes, I would consider it, alongside considering marriage. (Not that the latter has been good to me!)
(Didn't we have a long thread on this topic not so long ago?)
I do think the judicial review is warranted, why have an option that is only available to same-sex couples? Either do away with it for same-sex couples, or make it available to all.:heartpuls Mrs Marleyboy :heartpuls

There's already a very similar thread to this, posted only a couple of weeks ago.
There were many varied views on that, so maybe find that one and have a read through before another debate kicks off here with the usual suspects not being able to see another persons view on the subject if it happens to be opposite to theirs!0 -
no, I think they should do away with CP totally.. same-sex couples fought to be allowed the marriage ceremony and all the legalities it entails because CP's are second rate and if they are not good enough for same-sex couples they aren't good enough for anyone else.. They demean the commitment to one another by not allowing the same legal and financial rights as marriage brings.
How about they change the word 'marriage' to something disassociated from religion and ownership and called it something new.. such as 'family union' .. or 'couplage ceremony' .. or 'bonding party'? Its just different words for the same thing.. a CP is not the same.
I always thought there should be a different name for registry office ceremonies to church ceremonies..
Of course everyone will have a different opinion.. but each to their own.LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -

Not THIS old chestnut again? This was done to death several weeks back, and a few people in the thread (including the OP,) point blank refused to accept that if they wanted the same rights as married couples; they HAVE TO BE MARRIED. They just would not have it! :rotfl:
Oh and yes, a civil partnership IS a marriage.
Here is the other thread.

But for the sake of equality either everyone should be allowed a civil partnership or no-one should. I have no objection to unmarried long-term partners having the same rights as a married couple. My marriage means something special to me but other people have differing opinions.0 -
Heard the couple being interviewed today and I couldn't help but think that their objections for not marrying were tbh laughable.
Wonder what they would do if the law of unintended consequences kicked in and if the authorities got rid of cp what these people would do then?0 -
Not again !!!
