Can I remove a name / person from my credit card?

Options
My partner has just left me and I have a Tesco Clubcard Credit card where I am the main account holder but my ex-partner is listed as an additional name on the card. She has agreed to let me keep the card and the points but I am having trouble finding out how I can remove her name from the account.
Tesco told her she would have to close the account but that would mean I would lose all my points and have to wait for a new credit card whilst I have hardly any money.
Anyone have any experience of how these situations are resolved?

Thanks in advance!

Do you mean a credit card? Or just a clubcard account (for reward points)?

Credit cards are personal - so there is only one name, so no you cannot remove it.

An alternative is sometimes that someone has a secondary card in their name that is linked to your account. But they are then using your account.
Presumably you, as the account holder, can simply ask the card provider to stop that arrangement at any time (and the secondary card will be stopped)

In regards to clubcard points, they belong to the person/account that they were awarded to. I don't think they are transferable ... but Tesco could tell you for sure.

As above - if this is a credit card and you are the account holder, then you are in full control of any secondary cards. Ring up and ask for her to be removed.

Credit cards are not like current accounts or loans which can be operated jointly and severally. In the case of a credit card, no matter how many secondary card holders you have, if you are the main account holder you remain solely responsible for paying off the account. For a joint current account, mortgage or loan the bank can chase either party for the whole amount - so whomever they find first!

You don't need her permission to keep the card - it's yours.

Contact Tesco and ask for the secondary card to be closed/removed. If they refuse, make a formal complaint and put the request in a letter and send it by Recorded Delivery post.

  • OK so it turns out I was wrong and that she is the main account holder.
Is it possible for her to change the account name?

Then no, it is her account and she is responsible for it.

. . . but she could ask Tesco to remove any user from her account.
