  • "Streaming" is downloading, the difference is the data is only stored temporarily once downloaded.

17Mbps is plenty fast enough to stream video, but be aware that all broadband over BT phone lines is line length limited, the greater the distance you are from the exchange (ADSL) or cabinet (FTTC) the lower the maximum achievable "speed".

Yes 17mb is enough for watching films on the Fire stick.

As for Plusnet I would search the forum for any views or any trouble anyone has had with them, they are owned by BT if that's of any help.

A lot depends upon how far you are from the exchange and the quality of the cabling .

I would personally consider BT SKY and Plusnet out of the main providers .

it says virgin is my fastest and u switch offer a great deal

    12 month contract
    line rental £17.99
    up to 50 mb £5

has anyone ever used u switch before
  • VM use different cable from all the others as they have their own physical network which usually comes to the house on coax, similar to aerial / satellite cable, rather than twisted pair which is used on the BT network. This means that you will always get close to the quoted speed.

Many people use and like them. We have them at work and I don't like them at all, but my reasons won't apply to >99% of domestic customers.

17MBps is the theoretical maximum on ADSL-most customers will get nowhere near that, but you can stream perfectly well on 3/4MBps.
The primary factor affecting speed is distance from the exchange, and that does not alter with supplier, nor does your line alter.
All the providers will give you a speed estimate if you put your phone number into the online checkers.

Yes but fibre is more reliable than ADSL .
A lot depends upon where the streams originate .
