Money in Mexico-help PLEASE

Off to Mexico in a few days, bit of advice needed.

I'm staying all inclusive so have NO idea how much money to take.

I've decided to take £200 of Mexican Pesos, but am wondering whether to get American Dollar or British Pound travellers cheques for the rest.

My problem is that I get Pound travellers cheques for free exchange, so when I fetch some back, I don't get shafted by the exchange rate.
BUT, will I shafted by the exchange rate out there?

Any help much appreciated
Dave

We took some Pesos with us, and then got additional Pesos from ATM's with a Nationwide card.

Although US Dollars are widely accepted, the local people prefer being paid in their own currency and will often offer you a better deal for paying in Pesos.

Also remember to keep some Pesos to pay your departure tax at the airport when you leave. They will take cash and nothing else. A number of people in our flight queue didn't and had to withdraw cash at a very expensive ATM in the check in hall before they were allowed on the flight.

Have a lovely holiday - we loved Mexico and are desperate to go back!

Is is £50 dollars departure tax or $50 pesos?

Not got time to get a Nationwide debit card, already have their credit card for overseas...D'oh. Should have opened an account, but always said next week!

I forget how much the departure tax was. We put the cash in the wallet with our return tickets in the room safe, so we knew we had it!

Any other credit/debit card will work. We had no problems finding ATM's. Same rules apply as here - free at a bank, but a fee charged for convenience machines.

British Pound Travellers cheques won't be much use.

As above, Pesos are the best, although US Dollars are widely accepted.

    Have a good holiday

Think I better get some more pesos then.
I do know british pound travellers cheques ARE of use, just wondering whether the exchange rate over there would be poor.

    Exchanging money-licence to shaft you:cry:

if you're not sure if you're going to use it all, take the 'extra' in dollars - much easier to change back in the UK!

  • Thanks guys, this info's been really useful to sort out travel money for my holiday to Mexico next week.

If anyone knows for certain if the exit tax is 50 US Dollars or X amount of another currency I'd appreciate knowing!

Hello guys and gals,I'm off to mexico on the 1st September.

I do have my flex account but I already got a few hundred US dollars as I'm all inclusive.
So if I can pay for tours would I be best using debit card to get money out in pesos
to pay for those??? or dollars??

I see that no-one has posted what exactly is the best way to pay the exit tax...

Can any one help me and post answer please before I go..

    Regards
    Dave H.

Departure tax is US$45 per person (payable in cash).

Some tour operators include it in your holiday cost so check with them - I know that First Choice do.

I'm very jealous of you all going to Mexico - I love it there!

We've just received our tickets and it says the exit tax is $50-55 USD. That's with Thomson if that makes any difference.
If you have nothing constructive to say just move along.
