Ethernet connection problems (Virgin Media)

Hi there all,
just wondered if anyone could help re me connecting to the net with an ethernet cable.
The story is I reformatted my computer with relatively little problems. However, when I went to connect to the net, I could only connect via a usb lead & not ethernet (I need the ethernet for my router).
I contacted Virgin Media, who agreed to send a new modem as I had an older one, however, this did not solve the problem.
My gut feeling (& I am far from computer literate) is that it is some kind of driver problem. I have done all I can to try & access a driver, but with no joy ( I don't even know what modem I have (apart from it appears to be the new 'ntl 250' although it does also have 255 stamped on the back!).
Anyway, that's about it.
If anyone could offer me any advice that would be great.
Cheers in advance,
Paul.

Look in Device Manager, Network Connections. Highlight your Ethernet adaptor and check that it is enabled, check drivers, troubleshoot etc. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

Cheers for the reply esspresso,
I tried this. When I have the usb lead in it shows up as a 'USB cable modem 351000' under network adaptors. However, when I change it around to the ethernet lead (even after turning on & off the computer / modem) it does not even have the heading 'Network Adaptors'. There is obviously a lack of communication between the modem & the computer, but it is not the lead itself. I say this as it happened immediately after reformatting & I have also tried 3 leads which I know worked before this, yet none of them work now.
Anyone have any other suggestions...???
Cheers again,

In Device Manager, do you have any yellow exclamation marks under network connections? You may have to enable your Ethernet adaptor and possible update the driver. There should also be a Troubleshoot button, Right click, Properties. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

I do not have any ? or ! under the network adaptors bit (although I do have some on 'other devices' but I do not think that is related). I have also tried the troubleshooting bit & also un & re-installing the driver for the modem but this does not work either. I was just wondering whether there is a driver I need to install for my ethernet port?
I had a quick look at it thinking it would be on its own card, but it appears to be part of the motherboard & I cannot see any kind of make or anything.
Any other possibilities?

yes you need to download drivers for all the yellow question marks
try right click, update drivers, goto manufacturers website, or google the instance id
PCI\VEN_8086blahblah....Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
You may find that your onboard ehternet is disabled in the BIOS.

The modem is completely unrelated to your network adaptor (Ethernet). You may need to re-load the chip-set drivers for you motherboard but you do need to get rid of any !'s though. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
I used to have this with an MSI motherboard, the network adapter drivers had to be installed manually. Should be on the disk that came with the board or with the pc.
Once these are installed you may still need to run the network connection wizzard to get your internet working again.Looking to set up a website. Use PM for the best prices.0
