Free "word"

Hello, can anyone direct me to the website which gives you the free word progressing tool. I got a lovely new laptop for Christmas and I'd like to be able to type letters etc., but I remember that Microsoft Office was quite expensive and I won't be using it that much.

Thanks in advance.

If you put Word PROCESSOR into Uncle Google instead of Word PROGRESSOR you will be directed to Open Office or Libre Office. Many people have asked for opinions on each of the two mentioned and they come out about equal as they are based on people's opinions rather than objective tests. I would suspect either would do for your needs.

I use Open Office and Word 2003 and they are very similar. I do slightly prefer Open Office for some tasks. You need to save your documents in .doc format to make them compatible with Word.

Or you could use the free on-line version of MS Office including Word.

  • Like everyone else suggests, Open Office is an excellent offline tool. However, if you're into storing things online, then Google Docs works well for basic tasks too and your work is stored on the cloud. :)

This may or may not help - but I recently got the full Office 2016 suite for £10 through my employer on Microsoft's "Home Use Programme".

Obviously it depends who you work for, but I'm guessing that many large organisations that use Microsoft products may have a similar offer.

As I said, doesn't answer the question but might be worth exploring.

I previously used Open Office but now switched to LibreOffice (https://www.libreoffice.org/), and I just save all my documents in .doc or .docx format so they can still be read/edited on other computers that use Microsoft Word.
  • Ooops, Word Processor was what I meant! Thanks for the replies, will follow through this weekend. Cheers!

I agree WPS Office is good. Getting pro version free even better. Looks a good website. Thanks.
