Best budget CPU under £40

Can anyone recommend the best budget CPU under £40 for a very cheap PC build.

Not bothered whether AMD or Intel just want best performance available. PC will be used for Vmware testing mainly along with Visual Studio 2015, not sure whether that has a bearing on cores etc

and your motherboard takes a ???? skt CPU.

not the price of the CPU , its the other bits.

do you want a motherboard/cpu combo?

if so look at the AMD/radion setups.

ITX format (fits a std case)

MSI AM11 , chosen because of on board USB pins (ft panel) http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00J3OQDN2?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00

AMD APU Athlon 5350 Quad Core Processor http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00IOMFAQ0?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00

and in my case 4g hyperx ddr 1600 memory http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00J8E8Z42?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00

    memory £17.07
    motherboard £26.99
    CPU £37.99

with a 120g ssd this flies along running windows 10 , and has adequate video.

If you want a mothboard + CPU bundle I would go for Socket AM3 + Phenom II for about £30-£40.

Go and buy any old complete dual core PC for £40 it will run VMWare.

I have an old AMD 5200+ and even when it had 2GB of RAM i had upto 8 VM machines running at one time, slow yes but it worked. Going upto 6GB and 6 machines you wont really notice for most tasks.

Used socket 775 on eBay are good. I built a q9400 system for my nephew. The cpu was £25.

I can't tell it apart from the i5 2500k cpu on my machine.

if you are going to be using VS2015 then it might be an idea to get more ram, as VS can really use up the ram.

Also make sure you have enough hard drive room.
i had a 120gb ssd drive, which just had windows and programs on. It filled up quickly (most of it from VS)

yeah ssd is very important these days. SSD drives have prough back a old su7000 laptop from 2009 to good use. Also a core2duo E7*** was brought up to speed using an SSD.

Samsung EVO series of SSD is very cheap and decent quality as well. It has cheaper type of memory than the pro series but it wont depreciate in the next 10 years by then the sata technology and storage capacity of the drive is likely to be redundant and due an upgrade anyway.,
  • I suggest you get a CPU with VT-x extensions (or the AMD equivalent) if you're going to run a hypervisor. Intel's website lets you check for every CPU they make, no idea about AMD.

What does VT-x extensions bring you. I assumed you can run VMWare on most chips. Would a AMD 5350 chip have VT-x?
