An additional factor: I have moved in the meantime (it was issued in 1977!) and I will probably be moving again in the near future. Is there any legal requirement to advise such changes (or, more importantly, any comeback if you don't)?

If you've moved you can get a photo one for free - so one disadvantage gone.

My mate couldn't hire a car in California without a photo driving licence - may be true of other US states and other countries.

I've hired a car in California with the old licence - sounds like it was an issue with the car hire company, not US law.

They were happy with passport as ID and the licence as being good to drive.

Don't forget that if you have a new plastic one, you still have a large piece of paper that goes with it (as big as the old paper licence) that you are asked for by the police, car hire companies, etc ,etc ...... progress ?

i dont carry the paper bit with me, i dont see the point in doing so

You can't hire a car in Italy unless you have a photocard. I still have my papre one as I've never moved and don't intend on visiting Italy!. It is a legal requirement to inform the DVLA when you change your name and/or address. Failure to do so could result in a fine of up to £1,000.

Not so according to the RAC as long as your licence is the pink one and not the even older green one.

However car hire companies are free to make up their own rules which may be more stringent than the local law.

If you dont need it purely as photo ID why bother carrying the plastic part? From the rozzers point of view its not a valid license unless you show both parts together. You probably won`t escape a producer with just the card.

Definitley don't need plastic photocard in Spain - Driving licence was nicked with wallet but we still got the car later using passport and the paper half.

Plastic licences have to be replaced every 10 years and you have to pay..

Blimey, I'm glad I read this thread! I didn't realise this and have just checked my plastic licence. Just as well, it runs out in 15 months. Thank you Rikki! :D

I only got mine in the first place because I married and my name changed; I wouldn't have bothered otherwise.

Are we sure about this? I went all through the change of address rigmarole on the DVLA website, and they tried to charge me £22.
The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life. :)
