Does section 75 protection apply to building an extension?

I have hired a builder to build an extension. The cost of the extension is £24k and I have paid £8k of this total on my barclaycard. Does anyone know if I have any protection under section 75 for the quality of the work done if it proves unsatisfactory?

I believe you have that protection.

Have a read of MSE's Section 75 article for more detail.
  • Provided that the payment was made directly to the builder or his business and the extension is for residential and not business purposes, I can't see any reason for S75 not to apply.

I have read this and loads of other info available. MSE is by far the most clear and comprehensive. In everything I've read I've just not found a single example relating to building work yet, which left me unsure about whether I'd have any recourse should I encounter problems in my situation. Thanks for the quick replies.

This is the nearest I could find to building work (It's kitchen refurbishment).

Scroll down to near the bottom of the page and look for 62/03.

It's also worth remembering that under S75, if there is a fault or problem with the goods or service paid for on credit, the credit provider isn't only liable for the price paid. They can also be liable for costs over and above the price of the goods or service so if you were to pay the builder £24K and they somehow screwed up and did £30K worth of damage to your property, the credit provider is equally liable for covering the £30K worth of damage.
