New house first energy bill...big

A tip for the future, always use your phone camera to read the meters. Lots of phones will automatically date and time the photo too (good for evidence if you have an issue later).
Copy them to Google Drive or some other cloud storage to keep them safe.0 -
OP, you need to tell us the actual billed kWh usage for that period. £76 tells us nothing at all. Also confirm that you have mains gas CH and DHW. £200 per month is perfectly possible in one of the coldest months, as you can use up to 80% of your annual usage in the coldest 3 months. It doesn't mean that your annual bill will be £2400.
That period also includes the Xmas and New Year holidays when the property may have been using more than usual. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Are you heating the conservatory? and which rooms are above the garage. most places built in the 60 wouldn't have had much if any insulation between the garage and the rooms above it. We've had two houses with integral garages and the rooms above the garage have been really hard to heat.
If it's yours and not rented I'd be tempted to investigate getting the ceiling void above the garage insulated. what sort of insulation have you got in the rest of the place (including the loft) are you in a terrace or semi-detached, double glazing, heating controls etc. How old is the heating system, what sort of boiler have you got
Not saying that there isn't a problem with your readings but all these could contribute to higher than average consumptionNever under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -
Remember this is our final meter reading from the previous owners utility company before moving to our one which is on a fixed tariff.
The bill states-
Personal projection for next 12 months:
Electricity £711
Gas £627
Standard SC ROB
Tariff comparison rate-
Electricity 18.02p per kWh
Gas 5.23p per kWh
In the period of this bill we have used-
Electricity - 10.53 kWh
Gas - 90.82 kWh
Last years usage for this period - both 0 kWh
If that means anything to anyone else because it doesn't to me! Thanks to everyone who has replied0 -
Either I'm tired, confused or both. If that was your electricity usage, how does the bill break down? 91kWh at 5.23p doesn't make £76. Also on their own projection they estimate your gas usage at around £50pm.
Have you asked them why it's so high?0 -

Can you please type in all the meter readings (the numbers you wrote down from the meter) you gave the energy company and the dates you gave them.
If you did not make a copy they should be on the bills. Ignore any estimated ones.
This thread is going on for far too long and people are repeat posting solutions when we have not confirmed the problem.
Meter readings and dates please!0 -
Hi,
you are making this difficult with not giving the details already asked for.So I gave the meter readings on Jan 2nd and for the period of Dec 19th to Jan 1st have been sent a bill for £117.
This is for electric and gas. Gas made up £76 of this bill.Remember this is our final meter reading from the previous owners utility company before moving to our one which is on a fixed tariff.
The bill states-
Personal projection for next 12 months:
Electricity £711
Gas £627
Standard SC ROB
Tariff comparison rate-
Electricity 18.02p per kWh
Gas 5.23p per kWh
In the period of this bill we have used-
Electricity - 10.53 kWh
Gas - 90.82 kWh
Last years usage for this period - both 0 kWh
If that means anything to anyone else because it doesn't to me! Thanks to everyone who has replied
So your first bill 19 Dec-1 Jan £117, gas £76 so Elec £41.
Ignore that projection, that is from the previous owner's supplier, who you are not with now, and based on 2 weeks usage, so just forget that.
Though you say,
In the period of this bill we have used-
Electricity - 10.53 kWh
Gas - 90.82 kWh,
is that for the two week period or per day?
If you want help please provide accurate meter readings, as already asked by others.
So, readings for gas - electric on day you moved in (date) - readings provided 2 Jan,
details of tariffs, unit prices (incl vat?), standing charge,
also, an up to date reading (date) would help as well, to gauge usage, and details of new suppliers tariffs.0
