I am finding this thread very very helpful!
I am usually the one in the family that 'Caters' family party buffets! I always make sure the vegetarians are catered for. it hadn't occurred to me that the carnivores may have left little for the veggies. (though, I have to say that I do prefer to overcater rather than undercater).
I think on the next buffet I will keep a closer eye on the buffet table, some veggie items in reserve, and top up if necessary.
its easy enough to make sure the veggies get their fair share at buffets at home - but when you are catering for 100 or more - its not so easy.

At a friends wedding years ago, everyone got their food, n I waited n waited. Eventually I asked where my meal was, n the waitress actually said , " it wont be long, we were serving the normal people first.":mad:

Sorry, I burst out laughing there. Totally unbelievable. Were you able to respond, or was it a case of jaw dropping down to floor level?
(Really sorry, I cannot stop laughing at this one, brilliant.)

I am not a vegetarian but not a fan of roast dinners. so at the compulsory 'charity do' of the place I worked for ordered the veggie option of 'Mushroom Stroganoff'.
well, at the do, the service was abysmal but OH did get his roast beef dinner and I waited over 45 mins for my stroganoff. along with a few others at the huge table. um it came and I couldn't believe my eyes! mushroom stroganoff served with cabbage, roast potatoes, boiled potatoes, carrots and GRAVY!
it was seriously disgusting! and the real veggies refused to even try it!
I was royally PO'd and left early to get a 'takeaway'!

I have seen this happening at catered for do's. It's totally ridiculous. What would it have taken to boil up a pot of rice? Of course it could have been down to the organisers, rather than the caterers.
  • Another thing that I mostly avoid out is bbq's. I really don't want my veggie kebabs or whatever, sitting next to some meaty sausages or burgers. (There are exceptions with friends and family who go to the bother of using two bbq's, one for meat, the other for veg).

Worst was at a posh hotel, where I was assured that the bbq was totally vegetarian, no cross-contamination blah blah. Went up to get some food, and it was all being cooked on one large bbq, with the same utensils to turn and serve all the food.

And no doubt the fat was flying everywhere.
