Sounds like a lot of hard work if you do not live alone and cater for yourself only, but cook for a gang/family some of whom are and some of whom are not veggie/vegan.

What a pain in the you know what.

As if cooking for a family was not trial enough.

Fair dues to those who cater for everyone. But then there are those pesky allergies and intolerances around now too.

    Hmmph.

THRIFTWIZARD, you sound brilliantly organised, n the reason they probably pay you more, is that a lot of unimaginative people, think that cooking for veggies is harder work ;)

There's also those people/restaurants, who think fish is suitable for vegetarians.

I'm a vegetarian, and have been since I was 10/11. The amount of times people ask me if I eat fish (in a restaurant scenario), I could bash my head on the table. A service station 'chef' asked if I ate fish, when my dad asked him what the vegetarian option was, if I ate fish, wouldn't I have chosen the fish option ?!

The amount of people who decide to tell you, well they know someone who is vegetarian and they eat fish. Like somehow you're at fault for not eating fish, when those 'vegetarians' aren't vegetarians at all, but pescetarians in fact. Argghh!

    Ditto chicken in my experience.

I don't find being a veggie hard at all, dead animal is just not on my radar. I'm another one who stopped eating it - 20 years ago, I think - as I didn't like the taste but it was the right thing to do and later became a matter of conscience (I stopped eating fish 15 years ago). The smell of animal flesh makes me feel sick, and it does not enter my home.

.I never liked bacon even when I did eat meat . I just don't like the idea of eating animals.

I do find it hard when I go out for a meal, as most veggie dishes have chilli in them and I hate chilli !!

I think if I had to eat a burger or sausage I would be sick
  • I don't find it hard at all. Just like an icon bacon and egg sandwich every so often. No problem!

You are aware most carmine food colourings are of plant origin now rather than crushed bugs?

It is being switched to alleviate allergic reactions rather than eating bugs being gross. Since 2012 it is gradually being changed but still using the same E120 just has a different sub-number which isn't usually added.. if in doubt speak to manufacturers!

On the other hand, if something does contain high colouring / additives it's probably best to give it a miss full stop. Eg strawberry sponge puddings are hardly vital to health!

Actually one of the easiest things about being a vegetarian is shopping, as I can walk straight past most convenience and ready-made foods.

  • I'd rather not take the chance pigpen.

If it isn't actually labelled "Suitable for Vegetarians", then I assume the worst.

Also, the milkshake syrup was labelled "Not suitable for Vegetarians".
