The only reason older people didn't waste their money on iPhones and skiing holidays is that the former didn't exist and the latter was in relative terms unaffordable for anyone except the aristocracy. Instead the older generations wasted their money on the tat of the day or spent all their money on cabbages which cost 90% of their take home pay. Things are different now but I don't think there's a lot of evidence to suggest that every penny earned before 1980 was kept in a jar.0

I'll pay £10 for one night whenever the tennertastic is on, I'll pay the taxi fare to your local Travelodge and £3 for a Greggs meal deal.
Danothy is a fellow poster who you're going to share the experience with.
Your eyes are about to be opened.
Sorted.
I'm not a user of taxis, never have been. My local Travelodge probably wouldn't ever be on the £10 list; £10ers tend to be in hellholes, grim places, or alongside motorways. My local Travelodge is within walking distance, so I can walk - can I keep the taxi cash for myself?
mmm £3 for a Greggs meal deal - I'd not normally eat so well!!! It'll be like every Christmas rolled into one for me won't it
I hope Danothy doesn't snore, I'd have to say something.I think you're being groomed by wosthat.
Ah, thank goodness. Nearly 60 now, I thought it'd never happen to me. There IS a God!Makes a change from michaels.
Maybe michaels will finally up his game now then. Competition should sharpen his mind a bit.0 -
I do find these sort of ignorant comments stupid.
If only these youngsters didn't spend £300 on an iphone they would be able to afford to pay £300,000 for a house on an average salary of £25k.
If only they didn't go on holiday to Ibiza once a year for £200 they would be able to save shedloads towards a pension.
Of course its different now - house prices have risen five fold in 20 years and in some areas ten fold.
My father was in an average wage job when he bought his in London in 1970 - it took a £1,500 deposit and a mortgage of 1.5 times salary.
To buy home in the same area now you would need to have a £100,000 deposit and take out a four time salary mortgage assuming of course you earned three times the average wage. If my parents were starting off now they would probably be forced to rent a one bed flat - not afford to buy a three bed house.
Sorry - its not comparable. No one claims the 'boomers' had it easy - but heavens haven't they left a legacy of debts and unaffordable pensioner benefits which the next generation will have to pay for - while also struggling to save for a deposit for a one bed flat when their rent takes up half their salary.0 -

I have no doubt when todays gen rent are pensioners and have collected the windfalls from those before them, they will shaft the generation that comes after them.0 -

Doubt it - I think most of the freebies todays pensioners get will end soon i.e. when the Conservatives lose an election.
No free NHS in the future or charges for large parts of it (e.g. visiting a GP or hotel costs of hospital stays), probably means tested state pension, no supported social care, no universal free travel or heating allowances etc- cos it won't be affordable due to the demographic changes.
Another problem we face is the cost of living - and the cost of housing. We are having to subsidise so many working age Brits in work - so we find ourselves in the odd situation now that so many of those who should be net contributors are not because they need tax credits and housing benefit to pay the bills
While high house prices might look great we are going to pay a big price for them in future as the housing benefit bill will eventually exceed the cost of the NHS0 -

Not since I quit smoking about ten years ago.If you think of it as 'us' verses 'them', then it's probably your side that are the villains.0 -

Fancy kitchen gadgets - does my £26 slow cooker count? That's the biggest/baddest/best gadget I've got.
Never had a designer handbag. Usually bags are £2.99 from the market and last 5+ years.
Shoes are cheap/fake crocs and work shoes are sub £10.
I've done all that ...... and still got sweet fanny adams
No pension.
OK, got a house, but that was a fluke.
The viewpoint in the posh paper is aimed at people who are earning enough to make those choices. Many people don't earn enough to be making any choice.
You're not in the target sample set PN.
Edwina probably bases her whole sample set on the coffee shops and tea rooms of Kensington and Chelsea.
I don't see the Swiss version of MSE commenting on the vast increase in young people coming over from UK taking over all their chalets and ski passes. Hey Edwina! This making stuff up game is fun !!
If Edwina wanted to be positive, she could advise on how to stop Tech being treated as disposable fashion.
Every Xmas Apple will be promoting it's latest iDevice N.
Every following Spring Apple will be launching the iDevice N+1.
If you are N-1 or N-2 behind, you are simply not up with the "in crowd".
It's peer pressure marketing at its best.
That's what you get as Apple when you build the best marketing teams I guess.0
