I wouldnt clasp gold coins as a investment more a preservation of wealth re inflation.
They are only an investment if the price is cheap and the price is only cheap after a major bank reserves sell off re 2000 the gordon brown fiasco. I think golds reached its price now and will hover about for the next 20 years unless theres another government sell off.
Mining shares are good though if you pick the right one.0 -

i don't disagree; just bear in mind the huge volatility in the mining shares, sometimes on a daily basis. 200-300 pence swings either way on Rio Tinto, Lonmin, ANTOFAGASTA, XSTRATA - these are not unusualBLOODBATH IN THE EVENING THEN? OR PERHAPS THE AFTERNOON? Thats why i like them, make lots of money buying on the cheaper side of the swings. Its like anything wait until its a cheap price and theres either a lack of news or some minor irrelevant doom news.
Also got a little bit across a few starter companies that are simply prospecting as ive made shed loads off the ones that dont go bankrupt (absolutely made a mint off one oil starter company)
I like gold coins too, buy as old as you can get without the age affecting the scrap price, double eagles, 18th century sovereigns etc. Think of the numisastic value too, get things that are rare or unusual. Search around as chards probably not the cheapest place. Try searching for if any of these dealers have websites -

or maybe ring them.
But the thing with gold coins its a very long term thing and a lot to do with luck. So its more hobby and fun then expecting returns.0
