young persons insurance 1 year ncb

Next month I will have my first years no claim discount. I am also planning on doing the IAM test before my renewal is due.
I am currently with direct line and paying £121.32 a month and I have just turned 22.
The area i live in is a black spot for insurance (luton)

When I tried getting a new quote off of DL's website it worked out more expensive and the comparison websites I'm using are working no more than £20 a month cheaper even with my no claims, advanced test and adding my dad onto my policy who I don't think has ever had an accident in over 20 years.

I work as a waiter and study finance. The car is kept over night on a drive and in a secure public car park during the day.

I don't quite get what I am missing here in order to make it cheaper

DL won't discuss my policy until it is time for renewal
I used to have a black box but don't want one again. they put me on edge

Where can I go from here?

I am 21 male from London

Parked on drive? Try parking on street it's cheaper for me on the street

Try day time parking street away from home / open car park rather than secure

Advanced driving test sometimes doesn't make it cheaper

Remove your dad does it work out cheaper? It was cheaper for me

I have a black box and I am with bell no issue for me if you want a quote RING them- what I do usually is check the website first play around with the variables in fake name and then delete cookies and try with real details and then wait 2-3 days for them to ring you or u ring them if they don't and haggle say my student finance is less than I can't afford that much bla bla - mention the cheapest quote you got they usually beat it... They have for me and all my friends who have gone with admiral group via bell/ elephant whatever company

Ideal mileage for me with my insurance was 9000 anything less or above shot the price up so play around sometimes more works out cheaper

Car value? Increasing sometimes decreases insurance I don't know if it's allowed but I know they won't pay you more than your cars worth if anything happens

Sorry another thing I forgot is how much is your excess currently? Have you thought of increasing it to £1000 or so voluntary and compulsory combined this should decrease insurance by roughly £200

What you then do is google car excess insurance and purchase a policy

I have a £1000 policy from shortfall for £38 and having £900 excess brought my insurance down by nearly £200 so that's £160 saved there

I have claimed on excess policy before when I had a 50/50 at fault accident no hassle... Only thing if if you do need to claim you need to pay your insurance the excess and then get a letter saying you're at fault and you paid your excess send this to your excess insurance who will pay it to you

    Good luck
  • I've fiddled around with most of what you mentioned and I don't get much more than a £20 a month discount. Even with adding my one year no claims or advanced driving test qualification. Even with comparison sites. I'm at a loss at what to do when it comes to renewal as it is hardly a big discount I'm getting with other companies so direct line won't have to save me much to keep me.
They did say however they could drop it down to below £1000 hopefully come renewal when I spoke to them. But this means nothing of course

Change the car to something cheaper to insure. Its a bit hit and miss though.

I got quotes on 2 identical spec cars, same year, same engine, etc etc. even down to the same colour but one was cheaper to insure than the other?

Insurance groups mean nothing - they do it on actual claims records.
Surprisingly, small cars with low-powered engines aren't the cheapest, because every risky driver tries one of those.
The cheapest quote I found for our daughter aged 18 was for a 25-year old Volvo estate with a big engine. Unfortunately they have zero street cred, so she preferred to pay £1500 rather than £500.

Or try a classic car - insurance about £100.

It was a Volvo 440 here for my daughter.. 1.7 petrol and much cheaper then even the usualy cheap suspects like the Panda and small fiats and Daewoo matiz etc. These tend to be the cheapest to insure.

She preferred the bus over the Volvo option though.

  • Changing the car isn't an option as I financed the car a year ago. On the job changer on this site the best one I could do is a waiter which is what I'm doing. I'm assuming it doesn't help that I'm a full time student living at home either.
I also park it in a private car park away from the uni which is secure.

I got a quote from aviva last night of £833 which is valid for 60 days. I'll have my no claims in about 70 odd days.
How likely is it if in two weeks or so I got the quote again and saved it until my renewal time it would be the same price or at least similar. Considering this is just over half of what direct line are offering me would they be able to beat it even though it's so low?

In your OP you say your first year's no claims is due next month???

You get a "no claim bonus" for holding a policy for a full year without making a claim.

Why do you now have "70 odd days" to get your "no claims"?

(If your renewal is actually due next month, then the quote you have should hold till then)
  • I miscalculated my dates and only realised once speaking to direct line

    OK

Do a quote again with Aviva as soon as you can for your renewal date, and if it's similar hang on to it till you get your renewal notice and see whether DL will beat it.

(Also bear in mind the cashback sites - both DL and Aviva often offer in excess of £50 cashback)
