Is my night time economy 7 usage correct?

£50 a month is not expensive for two winter months, it's about £1.60 a day, and that includes all your hot water as well, assuming the immersion heater is on E7 cheap rate too
This is not average usage over a year, because you moved in at the start of winter and have the heating on, Once it goes off in Spring, your usage will fall dramatically. Concentrate on heating and hot water, the other usage is marginal. Sitting in the dark to watch TV is just silly, because you can run a 5W LED bulb for 200 hours for the cost of one unit, about 14p on peak rate. That's less than a penny for 10 hours. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
can you tell me how much it costs to heat up my water on E7 every night? ive got a 200 lire tank, Im trying to get a breakdown of my usage but scottish power dont have smart meters yet.0

Hi I use 2 storage heaters and water heated during off peak, I also use washer on a timer, my d.d is £65 per month which is too high but I claim about £200 back in April, I could just pay £50 a month but I prefer not to worry about the bill.
My input is on full now its cold put the output is always on 1 the lowest setting on my heaters and its warm all day and night, never needed to turn up the output or use the boost.0 -

It has 2 basic controls on the top- input and output - I kind of know how they work so since ive started using the heater ive set input to max (number 5 on the dial) and output to * (before the first setting, no 1 which is effectively off) yet the heat still seeps out through the day and lasts till about 11pm. I think this heater is a convector heater too as it has one further control on the top, away from the input and output switches called convector. I didn't think this worked unless the day time switch on the wall was turned on too...the dial was halfway round thou when I looked at heater the other day (we have never used this function so dial must of turned round by accident as they're very loose).
apart from this this is all I know about E7!
- example 6 starts boost early 3 starts boost evening, automatically day after day
- one is to delay permanently so to use less leccy keep the output control set to 1Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. Switch off everything else at night, and read the night rate meter register at around midnight . Read again at say 8am. The difference is the no. of kWh used overnight. Multiply that by your unit rate and add VAT at 5%.
However if you have NSH's as well you'll need to switch them off for that night. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Storage heater
Like all night store space heating most of the stored heat is radiated through the front panel and some [if you wish] can be released through the top grill via the 'output' control. So you have an input and an output, if you fill the heater [input] to its maximum and reduce the output to its minimum you will store the maximum possible cheap night rate heat for longer because with the output turned off it will need to take in less electricity the next night, and so on, and so on.
So set the 'output' to its lowest and the input to its highest.
Convector heater
The convector is a separate 13a expensive day rate heat and is switched on / off at the rocker switch and dial [1-5] stat on the side.
So switch the rocker to "0" and the convector should be permanently off.
Costs
Your maximum annual comfort costs for water & space heat should be around £800pa or about £66pm, that's £66 a month, every month. The winter kW usage will be about about two thirds of the total so you will use £560 in the winter and about £240 in the summer.
If you can't afford those prices all you need to do is reduce the input knob and it will cost less, with a corresponding reduction in heat output.
Water cylinder
Should already be PartL spec, the type of insulation has a very very low standing heat-loss [one kW per day (kWh/24h) on a 125 litre cylinder] permissible thermal transfer rate from the 60mm of insulating foam. The heat loss figures [below]are [relatively] so low you should not concern yourself by worrying about it.
1 kW per day (kWh/24h) on a 125 litre cylinder
1.5 kW per day (kWh/24h) on a 250 litre cylinder
2 kW per day (kWh/24h) on a 300 litre cylinder
So if you want to make the cost of hot water less - use less.Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion.
