Not questioning the quality, but I thought that the seller had to see certain documentation before providing the plates. There's no mention of that on the listing I read. So is it fully legal to buy from this chap?

Probably technically not, but the plates are good quality, come quickly, and are legally spaced and marked so they'll pass an MOT or Cop-check... So I don't worry about it.

Out of interest will these number plate dealers sell illegal plates i.e. those that are deliberately done to make a plate ready something else e.g. L411 RAS made to look like Laura S such that they are an automatic MOT fail and the police can pull you for it? If not, where do people get these plates done?

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

A lot of them will, yes. Perfectly legal for them to do so as well, as long as they state that the plates are 'not legal for on-road use'.

Obviously, most of the muppets with plates that say 'GARY WOZ ERE', made up of G4 ERE and eighty seven screws with black caps, don't give a damn about on or off-road use restrictions, since they know there's no chance of ever getting pulled over by non-existent roads policing units...

It is legal for you to buy. It is illegal to manufacture and sell without the correct licence and sight of paperwork.

they had it coming, they didn't even bother to ask buyers to send a scan of their logbook. Or work with the DVLA and send plates to registered addresses only. theyre all willing to just post a plate with whatever you want on it to make their money.

I actually see a fair few police cars around my area but that's a side issue. Must be a nice collection of MOT garages who will look the other way or are ignorant of the rules though, aside from the moving letters around, I see quite a few with illegally small letters or dodgy fonts. Maybe they are mates and get a pint or two to look the other way lol

It's a lot easier and cheaper than buying their mate a pint.

The plates are swapped over for proper ones before the test and then swapped back afterwards.

    Handy tool a screwdriver. ;)

Have you ever considered the fact the present the vehicle for mot with legal plates and change them after the test? No, of course you haven't because it's the mot tester who are dishonest and not the customer playing the system.

Yes, that's what I meant to say.

I have been running with a pair of plates from an internet seller for about 8 years. Legal font and spacing, but half the price and half the hassle. They have passed through several MoTs in that time too, without complaint. So I don't worry about it either.

probably just swap plates around for MOT. I watched a tv progam on traffic cops, a guy was using black plates with white font. He got pulled over and fined, made a big scene about discrimination and racism and then took his legal plates out of the boot and put it on.

It's nuts that they know it's illegal, they expect to be pulled over and possibly fined yet they still do it and carry legal plates to put on if they get stuck with a strict cop who wants to impund their car.
