If the boards are T&G in good condition and well fixed then you can tile directly to the boards using a 2 part rubber and latex based adhesive. This will save you money and time...

Thanks everyone
I think I may have to lay boards as the original floorboards have been lifted and put down again for the plumber.
Is this still the same that I would use a 2 part rubber and latex based adhesive?
Can anyone recommend a cleaner I should use for the tiles and a sealant for them, there is so much choice out there but want something good after the amount the tiles have cost.
My friend has an electric tile cutter which I am going to borrow and buy my dad some cheap tiles to practise on.
Don't get me wrong, he is quite a good tiler but just hasn't used and electric cutter before.0 -

If you are over laying with ply the british standard is 18mm...
With this you would only need a single part flexible cement based adhesive and grout. If you go thinner with the ply go more flexi with the adhesive ie 2 part flexible cement based.
The cleaner i would use would be concentrated tile cleaner for on going maintenance made by aquamix.
As for the sealer it depends on what finish you would like. I like to use a product called enrich and seal. This gives the stone a wet look. You an get a natural look sealer called sealers choice gold. These are both water based not solvent based so are much safer to use....
just type aquamix into google and you will find the cheapest site to buy them from......
