I didn't realise they could contact anyone I assumed that they would need my permission to contact that company due to data protection? So hard to know what's what as people say they may seek to ensure I worked at that place from date x to y. But that ks for your help!

How suspicious will it look if you refuse permission to contact your current employer?

What are you being accused of?

What area of work are you in?

There may be statutory requirements for the employer to report misconduct as part of the disciplinary process if allegations are proven.

All it would take is for your new employer to meet your old employer at a dinner party/trade fair/training session and for a discussion about employees to come up. 'I had to sack a person once for such and such a thing. Interesting really, I remember them because they had bright red hair and....'
Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).
  • It is also worth noting here that should the OP be dismissed and take the employer to an employment tribunal and win that still doesn't guarantee a decent reference.

A tribunal has no power to order an employer to provide a reference.

Obviously the OP could then say "i won a claim for unfair dismissal against my former employer" as that would be a statement of fact. However whether it would help with a job application is another matter.
