Will my poor credit rating effect my husbands

Hi, I was wondering will my poor credit rating effect my husbands credit rating?

We have a joint account and I am currently trying to work on my credit rating to improve it.

Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you

If you are financially associated then lenders may review you both if he makes a application for credit.

So yes, your history may affect him.
  • You could always apply for a financial disassociation from your partner, this is done through the CRA. I am not 100% sure if you would need to cancel the joint account to do this though.
  • You cant cancel an association if you hold a joint account - I tried to disassociate from my ex husband but couldn't because due to our matrimonial court order he remained in name only on our mortgage account, they only removed him last month when I paid the mortgage off
  • Hi Guys, Thank you very much for your reply. Would the best thing to do is get separate bank accounts then? xx

Is your credit rating really poor?...ie because you've missed payments, defaults, CCJs, lots of available credit, lots of debt, etc.

Or is it just not good?...because you've had few credit products in your own name.
  • Hi YorkshireBoy, Sorry for the delay.

Yeah I would say really poor, Missed payments and had defaults but no CCJs. This was 3 years ago now I manage the debt really wel.
