Double dimmer - very strange behaviour

Hi
I have two lights in my lounge and a double dimmer, one for each light. Recently the fuses blew so I checked the dimmer and there was a loose connection. We reconnected it and the lights worked but they were no longer able to dim, just on and off only.
We bought a new double dimmer, the same as before and reconnected it. We still have two on off buttons, but the dimming feature doesn't work... this is really strange... I would be very grateful if anyone can shed any light on this... ?
