If you checked out of the hotel, did they print out a bill which would have a time on it as this could be the start of producing evidence of you attempt to get back to the airport in time?

I doubt that would be acceptable as evidence of when you may have left the hotel. It's not unusual to check out of the room before breakfast if you're leaving soon after and it wouldn't prove you actually left for the airport rather than a last poodle around the town.

Update - I've received notice from the insurance company that they've agreed to settle my claim for £415 in full, for which I'm obviously very grateful.

Thanks to all for the advice given here.

That is a very good result. Not all insurance companies are bad are they!

My daughter and SIL had similar experience traveling from Exeter to Birmingham. Very early morning but an accident and re routing through country lanes meant they missed their flight.

They made a claim and it got accepted, but they did have evidence of the accident and resulting delays.
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.
