the dots always revert to a shorter length than what is behind it. Wpa is usually much easier than wep, and more secure. It is easier to type in an 8 character pwd first, get it working so you know the procedure, then get a more secure 63 character password, and copy and paste it.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

The pc is xp sp2 and the laptop is xp professional sp2

I mean the security settings for the router, I didn't think I have to set any security settings on the laptop for the wireless to work but its strange it wont connect properly when the security is set up..............

You need to enter the WPA-PSK key into your router (remember to click Save Settings) AND into any other device that needs to connect via wireless i.e. laptop. Get your password from the random password site and save it to a notepad file. Copy and paste it into the router AND also into the laptop when required. If you still can't get it to connect, try using a Hex character key instead of ASCII. Better to stick with WPA if you can get it working as it's much more secure.

    Thankyou, will try that

Might be a daft question but should my daughter be setting it up on her laptop via the windows or her card software or she noticed the wireless set up wizard but that would be for if shes setting up a router for her own laptop wouldnt it? so far shes only been trying the card and the windows one but not the wireless set up wizard

the wpa personal is a bit confusing too seeing as she doesn get that option on her latop only the wpa2 or wpa does that matter?
    Thanx

Most users find that windows handles wireless better.

Its wpa I might try the wpa2 though soon but daughters got a lot of uni work to do today so she needs to be using the laptop and I dont want to mess anything up at the moment seeing as its at least working with wpa now. They are both windows xp anyway so the wpa2 should work when I do try it
    Thanx

WPA-PSK should be fine with a long random password. Glad that you have got it sorted now.
